Now if only they would all fit into my little TSA approved zip lock that would be great!

Blissfully rolling into 2012!!!

The new year means we have open ended possibilities of what lies ahead. We learn and grow from our past. It's that simple. Can you imagine if we trusted more and feared less? The people in your life, your intuition, your dreams, your goals, your heart... the list goes on. That being said, I am going to jump into this new year with the fearlessness of my five year old self, but with the knowledge of my adult self.

I know most everyone's number one resolution is to get healthy and fit. So make it fun and enjoy yourself! You may actually stick with it all year and into the next several if you do. The trick to loving exercise and actually wanting to do it everyday is making it a treat for yourself not a punishment or a threat (I must lose 15 pounds or else... or I must gain this much muscle in this amount of time). Here is the biggest secret...you're doing your body a disservice if you aren't eating healthy too. Your stomach shouldn't be a waste basket! You will see quicker results and more importantly feel the results if you pay attention to what you put into your body too! So have at it at the gym or weight room, but try adding a few more salads and maybe a little less sugar. Here are a few quick tips to a blissful, fit and fearless 2012!

Be thankful for a healthy body (way too much negative body image talk goes on with women and men. If you don't take care of and love your body who will?)
Say yes to eating more greens!!!
Kick the soda habit.
Eat less sugar or better yet cut it out! ( psssst..I keep dark chocolate in the freezer for a quick fix. No one is perfect!)
Don't eat breakfast cereals that change the color of your milk.
White flour is out and whole grains are in (just in case you didn't know).

Practice yoga more often. My Body needs it with the eight shows a week/travel/hotel living.

Seek less approval and show those I love more love

To Love and be Loved...2011 comes to an end!

This year has flown by. I was not able to post as many articles as I would of liked because I was getting settled with Wicked while traveling the country, but I am already getting a head start for 2012! I've learned so much from my travels and have met so many wonderful people along the way. My family and friends have been so incredibly supportive through the years of my personal journey. I would not be who I am today or comfortable enough in my own skin to of published my Blog "Inside Out...Beautiful" without the support of the solid friendships and family that I have in my life.

In life we often don't get the positive recognition at our day to day jobs that we sometimes need or would just like to hear. Whether you are a stay at home mom cooking, cleaning and raising children, a teacher who is molding our young generation into our future, a lawyer, a doctor, a Broadway actress you name it. We all need people in our lives that support us and help bring out the best part of you while letting you shine and keeping you grounded. I am so thankful to have the most supportive group of close friends and family in my life. I try to often remind them of how grateful I am, but I don't think I could ever tell them enough.

One of my biggest fans and inspirations was my Grandmother who just passed away. She taught me to live life to it's fullest (which she did) with these simple steps: Always have your hair done, never leave the house without lipstick, baking cures a bad day, make time for tea breaks, have your cake and eat it too, don't let anyone tell you that you can't or aren't good enough to do something and most importantly life is too short to not love and be loved at any age.

As the new year approaches I plan to live my life to it's fullest by enjoying the journey where ever it may take me, cherishing my friendships/family and not taking them for granted, baking when life throws a curve ball and to love endlessly and openly.

Caudalie Vinosource Anti-Wrinkle Nourishing Cream ($50 www,sephora.com)
I use the slightly more intense RICHE formula of this which you can find in stores. I am most impressed with the all day hydration I get from this moisturizer without a heavy feeling on my skin. This rich antioxidant cream helps your skin retain water while fighting the appearance of wrinkles and soothes dry dehydrated skin.

Korres Quercetine & Oak Antiageing and Antiwrinkle Eye Cream ( $42 for .51 oz @ sephora)
I have tried pretty much every eye cream out there and you can't beat the results and price of this beauty steal! This three in one treatment helps minimize dark circles and puffiness while firming the under eye area. Most of all I love how smooth and hydrated my eyes look. FYI: This tube last me at least six months!

Ren Jojoba Micro Bead Purifying facial Scrub ($35 @ sephora)
The first step in hydrating your dull dry winter skin is to exfoliate the dead skin cells. How do you do that? Start with a great exfoliant. I love REN products because the are free of all of the below ingredients:

Mother knows best...

Mothers know best and mine never ceases to amaze me! No matter the distance between us and how infrequently we see each other (not by choice due to my career) she knows just what to say when I need her most. The truth is we never grow out of our parents. As eager as I was leaving home at eighteen to pursue my dreams, stepping foot out of my amazingly comfortable, supportive, loving life (as I had known all 18 years of it) and never looking back was all a part of my journey. I made it a goal to never need to move home after that day and I did everything in my power to make sure that never happened. So maybe I am a little stubborn...just a little, but driven. More than a decade later, several survival jobs, dozens of apartments in multiple cities and a dream job. The one thing that never changes in my "not so normal" life is my mothers constant love and support. A cup of tea, a walk in the park, a night to myself are just a few of her instant remedies to a sometimes exhausted me. Needless to say they work time after time. So although I never went back home to live, what I love and miss most is always with me through my family. Thanks Mom for keeping my truly beautiful "and calm" on the inside.

Fun Facts on SPF and my top two favorite Sunscreens!

Hi Ladies and Gents! This is one of my most passionate topics to write about. Year round SPF protection. I'm known among my friends to pull a bottle of sunscreen out of my purse when least expected. After working in the cosmetic industry and seeing the damage the sun will do to your skin; not to mention several family and friends having suspicious moles cut out of their bodies only to find cases of melanoma at it's early stages. From then on out I added SPF to my daily skin care routine, added yearly full body skin check ups with my Derm, started spreading the word and never looked back. If you were to ask me the most important beauty product I own or can't live without it would hands down be my sunscreen! I wear SPF 30+ everyday on top of my daily moisturizer and I ignore the fact that my moisturizer or makeup has SPF 15 (keep reading to find out why).

Did you know?...

Women in their twenties and thirties are known to brush off the dangers of sun exposure because they believe the damage is already done. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation the truth is you get only 23 percent of your lifetime sun exposure by the time you're 18; you accumulate about 47 percent from ages 19-40, more than any other time in you life. This is why wearing daily protection is so critical!

SPF measures only the protection you get from UVB rays, not UVA , and many moisturizers don't have enough ingredients to adequately block UVA rays, Dr. Friedman says (Glamour magazine, June 2011). The average moisturizers with SPF 15 to 50 don't actually shield against UVA. This is why you should apply a separate sunscreen to your morning skin ritual, or make sure your moisturizer contains either zinc oxide or a combination of avobenzone and octocrylene.

Experts recommend you should apply two tablespoons of sunscreen to your entire body and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.

UVB is completely blocked by windows however UVA penetrates them. You can accumulate exposure just by sitting in an office with a window or driving your car. (The average window allows 63 percent of UVA rays to pass through.) Another reason to apply SPF 15+ to your daily skincare routine year round.

Swimsuit. Aaaahhhhh! The mere mention of that word can set off more panic than a fire alarm. Why? Well for me, insecurity about my body began as early as I can remember. In ballet class the words “suck it in” stung badly, despite the beautiful British accent they came from. When it came to wearing a bathing suit, although my mom meant well, I was conditioned to wear a one piece, as I was not a two-piece candidate. Knowing this, I never wore anything revealing, which was just as well, because I don’t think that’s usually very appropriate for young girls. But the summer before 9th grade, the swimsuit s**t hit the fan. I was invited to the beach with a friend (who happened to have a knockout figure for an 8th grader) and brought my one piece along, wishing that I could hang out on the beach in leggings and a tee-shirt. My friend pressured me into buying a bikini at one of the shops on the boardwalk. While I knew inside it wasn’t the most flattering (that’s being kind) I bought it. I had no boobs and lingering baby fat... not pretty. Her intentions were questionable but no one could have prepared either of us for the attack that was about to unleash on me. When we went to the beach we met up with a few friends including a guy (should I out him for his immature cruelty?) who will remain nameless. The words “whale”, “flabby”, and “you should get your money back” were used. Mind you, I was 13 years old and under 100 pounds. Can you say scarred?

Anyway... 17 Summer seasons later, I was still walking by the bathing suit sections of stores, adoring all the cute little triangles of material, until this year, when I could finally say, “I don’t care”. I mean, I care enough, don’t get me wrong, but with a newborn, and a few stretch baby marks, I just want to enjoy a simple, fun, beach day, and I’m not going to let Brandon Lerner (woops, cat’s out of the bag) ruin it. And with my little boy in my arms, I’m sure that nothing feels more beautiful.

So to all of you I say this: don’t wait for your epiphany to get a boost of confidence. Be healthy in body and mind, to play with your little boy, and encourage your daughter to love herself just as she is. Natural Alternative to treating Acne by guest Blogger Laura Adams!

While I'm performing on the road for the next year or so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to introduce some of my favorite bloggers as guests on Inside Out Beautiful! My next guest blogger Laura Adams is a dear friend, fierce Yoga/Pilates instructor, veganist, foodie and natural beauty QUEEN! Lets just say we have quite a few things in common. I was thrilled when she jumped at the chance to be a guest blogger and if you have ever suffered from acne prone/sensitive skin you are going to love what she has to say. ENJOY and thanks Laura!

Birth Control, antibiotics, spironolactone, lasers and light therapies, chemical peels, comedo extractions, drainage extractions, proactive, benzoil peroxide, acupuncture, diet, herbs, lotions and dozens of doctors... YOU NAME IT I HAVE TRIED IT! After 10 years of trying to desperately figure out how to care for my acne, I FINALLY figured it out. Yes, in the end of my story there is a good ending!

All of the above that I have listed left me using products that further irritated my skin and body or just temporary changes that when finished my acne would come back with a vengeance. I was sick of looking at it, thinking about it, feeling it, and worrying about it because it was painful in more than just a physical way. I was always so self conscious about my skin, even at 30 years old. To be very honest, there was one product that did help me get control of my acne that I resorted to in a scramble before my wedding day and that was Benzoil Peroxide from a company called Clinical Formula based in Newport Beach, Ca, however it was not just the benzoil peroxide that was working but how I was using it-carefully with little amounts at a time.

After about 6 months I knew that benzoil peroxide was pretty harsh on my skin and that I could feel how my pours seem to always look big and open even without breakouts and that I wished I could find a natural remedy to keep control over my acne. So, I did what every American does and started googling. I wanted my issue to be less demanding, expensive, and bad for my health. I first started searching for the dangers of using benzoil preoxide over time and found that it releases free radicals into the skin for early aging and also can cause cancer. My ears perked up and I knew it was not something I should continue to use. I then started searching for natural alternatives to benzoil peroxide and an interesting concept of the oil cleansing method was brought up. I thought I had heard about oil cleansing method before but it was a process that required me to put the formula together and prior to this time in my life I was just too lazy for such a thing!

I started reading further and learned that by continually using washes and stripping the skin of it's natural oil just to replace it with artificial oils and additives or preservatives the skin will panic, create an overproduction of oil, and eventually cause your skin to be congested, clogged, and unable to cleanse itself naturally. So the basic rule of thumb here is oil dissolves oil, Simple as that. I had no idea that some oils have capabilities of actually cleansing and others are actually moisturizing. Once I learned this I was SO EXCITED I no longer had to continually be a slave to my acne medication again! I thought to myself, "You mean I can save $50/month and not get cancer-I'm sold." If you can relate to my story, keep reading!

So Where do you start? It is so easy it's ridiculous, but I will say you may to try to gage what type of skin you have and if you're not sure or have combo skin play it safe like I did. Here is a little rule of thumb:

Oily Skin: Try a blend of 30% Castor Oil to 70% Sunflower Seed Oil.

Balanced Skin: Try a blend of 20% Castor Oil to 80% Sunflower Seed Oil.

Dry Skin: Try a blend of 10% Castor Oil to 90% Sunflower Seed Oil.

The blend that was safe and worked best for me having major acne around my mouth and chin was a blend of 50% Castor Oil and 50% Sunflower oil. I honestly was so confused about my skin I was not sure if it was dry or oily. So in order to experiment, I decided I would start at 50% of each oil and decrease or increase from there depending on my skins reaction. There are lots of different types of oil one can use from grape seed, jojoba, olive oil, almond, and flaxseed. The reason I chose Castor/Sunflower was because Sunflower seemed to be the most gentle and moisturizing as the castor oil was used as the cleansing oil. Knowing benzoil peroxide worked for me to kill bacteria in the past I decided to add 6 drops of Tea Tree Essential Oil to my blend for the anti-microbial benefits.

To sooth the skin from any harshness from the tea tree essential oil I also added 5 drops of lavender essential oil to my blend. I strongly encourage you to play with essential oils, starting out slow and create your favorite blends! They can become so healing and be personally designed for what you need for your skin. I always say, you're your best doctor, so if this method speaks to you the way it did me, have fun and happy blending!

Tough Love 2011: Eating Healthy, Being Physical and Wearing Sunscreen!

There are three things I tend to preach about to the ones I love...eating healthy, being physical and wearing sunscreen! I know you have an excuse why it's hard to make any or all three of these things happen on a weekly basis, so I will answer the top three excuses for you so you can't use them anymore!

1. Eating healthy: I often hear it's too expensive to eat your greens and go organic. Eating healthy is actually very easy and much more affordable that it has been in the past. First off shop the store brands (they all have organic options too now). Shop your local farmers markets! This is so easy and you are helping your carbon footprint and supporting our local farmers. If you can't grow it yourself then why not buy it from someone you know (talk to the farmers to make sure produce is organic and no pesticides are used). Grow it yourself! If you have room for a garden this is your best bet! Don't forget to cook with family, loved ones or friends. Feed the ones you love healthy food!

2. Be Physical: I don't have enough time! This is my favorite! Make time LAZY bones! How many hours of TV do you watch a week??? hmmmm....that's what I thought and I don't want to hear you can't afford a gym membership or don't have one near you. Again...get off your bum LAZY bones and go for a run, walk, practice yoga or pilates at home, buy a set of dumb bells and lift weights etc etc etc..... Just do it! No more excuses...it's almost bikini and swim trunk season so lets get with it people! Tough love I know, but seriously how long are you going to just talk about getting in shape? As one of my best friends has always said..."Actions speak louder than words" I go to this quote for almost everything in my life and now I preach it to others. Seriously think about the phrase...in other words, don't just say it DO IT!!!

3. Wear your sunscreen: It's too greasy, I want to get a tan....lalalala. I literally have to slap the sunscreen on my friends when we are out...everyone want's to get a "tan" but tan is out and pale is in my friends! Have you heard of skin CANCER? That's right, "Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old and the second most common form of cancer for young people 15-29 years old. An estimated 114,900 new cases of melanoma were diagnosed in the US in 2010 — 46,770 noninvasive (in situ) and 68,l30 invasive, with nearly 8,700 resulting in death (taken from: www.skincancer.org)". Besides the whole "cancer" thing sunscreen is the ONLY preventative for aging! Sunspots, wrinkles, and dry weathered skin are what happens when you don't wear sunscreen! Don't hate me five years from now when I still look like I am in my 20's and you look five years older because you wanted to look "tan" for the summer! Tough love again...go buy a bottle of sunscreen gorgeous and don't let me make you look bad!

Checking in within means stress free skin!

What makes you happy? I ask myself this all the time. Maybe we shouldn't have to ask ourselves this question it should just be, but with crazy work schedules, school, family, parenting and just life in general the truth of the matter is a little checking in within never hurt anyone. After an off day I could easily resort to a new dress, lip gloss, hand bag etc... to boost my mood for some instant gratification, but I am actively setting up a challenge for myself to do something physical or go to any of the people I love and care about (this is one of the many reasons they are in our lives) to talk it out. The more we hold in the more the stress starts to show on our face and no bad work day, break up, tantrum, traffic, unexpected bill etc...is worth a wrinkle on that beautiful face of yours! So take a deep breath, a hot bubble bath, read a book, workout, give yourself a facial, call a friend or hug a loved one! These are just a few of my favorite de-stressers. You will be back to "happy" in no time and your wallet won't pay for it either!

Spring Clean Your Makeup Bag 2011!

It's that time of year again to Spring Clean your Makeup Bag! Bacteria can build up in your products which can lead to infections or allergic reactions. Take it from me, who learned my lesson a few years ago when I ended up in the emergency room with a swollen face and an adorable male NYC resident ready to inject me with cortisone...a day my best friend and I can thankfully laugh about now. In order to spare you this Grey's Anatomy moment, here is an easy guide to spring cleaning your makeup bag.

Face Cream: Throw it away after six months or sooner if the color or consistency changes or it starts to smell funky.

Mascara: After six months toss this baby (or before if it starts to smell off or change consistency). Mascara builds bacteria quickly and can cause infections and sties. When you open a new bottle do your best to keep it sealed tight and avoid pumping which lets in more air/bacteria.

Eyeliners: After six months get rid of any liquid liners. Pencil liners last longer (one year) since you can sharpen away the bacteria on the tip of the pencil.

Lipstick/Gloss: One year tops! However if it comes in contact with a cold sore or another type of infection say adios!

Foundation/Concealer: One Year! Don't make my mistake. This goes for stick foundations too!!! Throw away any liquids if they start to separate, appear oily or smell different. I also recommend moving your makeup and skincare out of the bathroom where humidity can turn your liquids quickly.

Blush/Eye Shadows/Powders: One to two years. Most powders will last about two years unless a white film appears before then. Creams last about one year unless they start to separate or turn oily.

Brushes: Life time. If you invest in good brushes and take care of them they can last a life time. I suggest washing them at home every few weeks. Just add facial cleanser or gentle hand soap in the palm of your hand with water and swoosh brush head around until color stops coming from the brush.

Natural/Healthy approach to beauty and lifestyle!

My focus this year is to educate myself and others on how to have a more natural/healthy approach to beauty and lifestyle in our day to day lives. One of the ways I have started to practice this is by eating Vegan. The first two weeks were tough, but by the third week I was hooked. Working in both the entertainment and beauty industries I'm surrounded by women everyday that are insecure about how they look and feel. However, I am also very lucky to have an extremely strong, confident, positive, passionate and independent group of very close friends (you know who you are) who inspire me every day. We all need to learn how to be confident in our own skin and to embrace who we are or make an active change, "actions speak louder than words" if there is something you aren't happy with then change it! Here are a few things I have been doing to improve myself and my life. Hopefully it inspires you!

Vision Board: I LOVE making these! Cut out pictures, quotes, people, words and phrases. Anything that inspires you and pin or paste them up on a poster board. This is a great way to creatively and actively ask for what you want. I try and update mine every few months.

Veggies: I am in LOVE with Kris Carr's "Cray Sexy Diet" book. Let me make this clear...I don't diet, but I eat very healthy and have learned to make it a way of my every day life. Kris Carr's book is full of knowledge and encouragement to eating a mostly Vegan diet (you don't have to be vegan to learn from her book). I am also a big fan of "Skinny Bitch" and the magazines "Whole Living" and "Veg News". I also strongly recommend watching the documentary "Food Inc". I made most of my family watch it over the holidays and everyone took something positive away from the film, even if they aren't ready or willing to give up meat.

Yoga/Exercise: Eating healthy combined with exercise is key to a healthy lifestyle. I promise you will feel better about yourself if you exercise at least 3 x a week. I like to change up my routine, but I tend to do yoga 2-3x a week and cardio (spin class, jog or elliptical) 3-5x a week with some weight training. I'm a little extreme, but exercise is my vice!

Plants: I would love to have a garden, but our balcony will have to do for now. This year I decided to add potted plants to my home decor. I'm also in the works of starting my own little balcony herb/veggie garden, thanks to a very thoughtful surprise valentines gift from my hubby.

Natural Products: I've cleaned out our apartment and all of our beauty/bath and cleaning essentials are earth/animal friendly. This is an easy change to make with the many options of natural products now available.

Farmers Market: Support your local farmers by buying local and organic! Why buy organic??? No pesticides or chemicals and this will also help improve your carbon footprint!!!

Donate: Donate old books, clothes, shoes to people that need them. I also love donating makeup and toiletries to woman's shelters.

100% Pure Organic Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream $19 (www.100percentpure.com) Anti-inflammatory, caffeine rich green tea and coffee de-puffs and while increasing circulation to brighten dark circles. I am not a mom myself YET, however I am very lucky to be a proud Auntie to so many of my family and friends children. "What makes you feel beautiful...?"

I've asked several women in my life of all different backgrounds, careers and ages "What makes them feel beautiful?" It was interesting to see how difficult it is for women to answer this question. Almost like they aren't worthy enough to be considered one of the "beautiful" people of the world. I told my friends and family this wasn't a trick question and there was no wrong or right answer. Some answers are short and simple, while others are long and detailed. In general, though, I found that taking care of ourselves is one of the most common answers.

I am very lucky to have a mom that I can look up to so much. She has made sacrifices to be a wonderful mother, wife, daughter, aunt and friend yet stayed true to herself all these years. She puts everyone else first yet takes care of her body, mind and spirit to keep peace and wellness within herself. Now that my sister and I are grown and have lived away from home for over a decade she still manages to know without being told when we need a little extra guidance. I frequently come home to care packages, such as inspirational books and insightful cards. I hope one day to be half the mother my mom has been to my sister and I.

My mother-in-law is a nurse in the wound care clinic at a large hospital. I asked her and a couple of her co-workers to answer my question. This is what the three of them (all over the age of 50) came up with:
-A good hair day: All three of them agreed that having a "good hair day" makes them feel beautiful.
-make-up over a face that may have had to have hair removal (mustaches, eyebrows, unwanted facial hairs). Filling in their eyebrows, putting on a favorite lipstick and a little blush makes them all feel more beautiful.
-exercise helps to keep my skin and body in better shape. Unfortunately, at work I see more interest in special diets than exercise and with women my age in general.
-smiles help a lot! Keeping each other smiling and laughing.
-confidence: when the air of confidence is there...all seems more beautiful.

When I asked my grandmother this question she didn't even hesitate at her response...
"I feel most beautiful when I get my hair done." For as long as I can remember every Saturday she would go to the beauty parlor and they would wash and set her hair in rollers. She may not make it to the beauty parlor anymore, but she has trained her home nurses to wash and style her hair just the way she likes it. I have a feeling this could be me in 60 years.

My sister is one of the most beautiful women I know. Not only inside, but absolutely stunning on the outside too. Everyday she makes a difference in this world changing the lives of 20 first graders. I thought it would be interesting to see how her students answered my question. She re-worded the question to them "What makes you feel good about yourself". These are their answers:

Many of my friends are wives, girlfriends, fiances and mommies. I asked my friend Renee (who I look up to very much) who makes motherhood, marriage and everyday life simple, exciting and effortless all the time "what makes her feel beautiful" and these are her answers:
-I feel 100% better overall when I've had a good shower and shaved legs
-makeup would have to be at the top of my list. I don't feel remotely beautiful until I have my makeup on. Plucked eyebrows and waxed lip is an added bonus
-exercise and eating well. When I exercise, I feel beautiful because I did something good for my body that day. The endorphins released definitely do something to my overall mood that make me feel happy and more confidant... making me feel beautiful.
-a little cliche, but what definitely makes me feel beautiful is when my husband tells me I'm the most beautiful woman in the world and looks at me with adoring eyes. When he compliments me, it boosts my confidence so much and when I feel confident, I feel beautiful. When my kids hug and kiss me, loving on me... that can't help but make me feel beautiful.

I think beauty goes beyond the surface and there are so many roots down deep from which it all stems from. service to others, caring more about others than myself, encouraging others in their gifts and talents, generosity, the giving of my gifts and time, a simple act of kindness....
when I choose to bless others with what I have to offer, it gives me that "that made me feel good" feeling in my heart. I'd like to think it's those things as well that makes me feel beautiful. Having a beautiful spirit and a beautiful heart, exuding love to others ... it's something I strive for. I fail A LOT, but it's worth the effort to get outside of myself and look to others often.

The first thing that came to mind for me that makes me feel beautiful is my health. I always try to start the day out with a great workout or yoga session. It clears my mind, gives me energy and makes me feel strong. I tried for YEARS to like yoga and just in the past 6 months has it finally become a constant part of my everyday life. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE what it does for my mind and spirit not to mention keeping my body toned and flexible. I am also very passionate about eating healthy and teaching others how easy and fun it is to eat healthy. Sharing my knowledge and getting someone else excited about their health makes me feel good about myself which in return makes me feel beautiful.

When all else fails putting on a pretty dress always makes me feel beautiful. I would say my closet is 70% dresses. When I wear a dress and heels it's like I turn into my 6 year old self and I can't help but smile. My mom loves to tell me that when she would take me shopping as a child she would know when I really loved something because I would dance around the dressing room and spin in circles...so unless the "dance" happened she knew not to buy it.

Sarah, the adorable sales woman who greeted me couldn't have been more helpful. She took the time to show me all of their top sellers in skin, body and makeup! I was like a kid in a candy store! I am so impressed that they are able to make their products 100% natural by using antioxidant rich fruit and vegetable pigments.

Fun Facts about 100% Pure (Taken from 100% Pure's website FAQ's page):
-100% products are truly 100% Pure-no synthetic chemicals, chemical preservatives, artificial fragrances, artificial colors, harsh detergents or any other unhealthy toxins.
-Vegan Products: We love animals and refuse to support anything that hurts animals which is why none of our formulas are ever tested on animals (everything we use is food grade and does not require testing, whereas chemical ingredients must be tested). This powder is made with rice powder and rich fruit pigments. I apply it as a finishing powder, but it can be applied for medium-full coverage too. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!

Lip and Cheek Tint $15 (I bought Sugar Plum Sheer). I am a huge fan of anything cream based and this product is FANTASTIC!!! Tinted with fruit pigments using moisturizing shea and cocoa butters. Also, highly concentrated with anti-aging vitamins and antioxidants. How could you not love this product?

Vanilla Bean Nourishing Body Cream $15 I lather up in body creams head to toe everyday and I LOVE how natural this body creme is. I had a very difficult time deciding on what scent to pick as they have over a dozen amazing choices. Top sellers are: Coconut, Mangosteen and Vanilla Bean!

Sarah was so sweet and gave me travel size versions of their top selling eye cream organic coffee bean caffeine eye cream .25oz $9 (larger size also available) and anti aging moisturizer Red Wine Resveratrol Nourishing Cream .5oz $12 (larger size also available)

Share Your Smile With Someone You Love!

We all get so distracted and caught up in our busy day to day lives. After this last year, I remind myself every day to not take even the simplest of memories I have with my family for granted. A weekend at home that I get to sleep in with my husband, a long walk and talk with my mom, a night of giggles and wine with my sister, watching old movies with my grandma, playing wii with my nieces and nephews, staying up all night with my aunt in front of the fireplace, and a weekend movie marathon at home with cousins you dearly love. These are just a few of the memories I have had in the past few months that remind me how lucky I am. My family and friends inspire me to be the best person I can be.

Make an extra effort this year to spend time with the ones you love. You will be amazed at the beautiful smile you can put on someones face simply with a phone call (lets get a little more personal than FB, Email and Texting folks), a visit, a card, just make an effort to reach out. You will be surprised at the joy you bring. With that being said...My beauty tip for the weekend is...Share your smile with someone you love. This will bring radiance, joy and beauty to all that are around you.

Guest Blogger Christopher Reid Lee...Men and HAIR!

I've been getting many questions about hair lately and I thought this would be a great topic for my first dedicated MEN ONLY post! What women doesn't want to run her hands through her mans thick head of luscious healthy locks? I reached out to my other OTHER half (aka gay husband,BF and personal stylist) and within hours not only did he tell me his favorite styling products. He wrote an entire article for me to share with all of your handsome men. It is so detailed I decided not to edit it at all...although he most certainly uses more product than I do in my own hair (that now practically reaches half way down my back). This is one of the many reasons why I LOVE him. Without further ado I introduce to you my next guest writer Christopher Reid Lee!

Let me start by saying it is most important to know your own hair. Each person’s hair has it’s own unique qualities and temperament. It is essential that you listen to your own hair and find what works best with its natural disposition.
I have naturally straight hair with a slight wave if grown out past my nose. My hair is naturally dark blonde with a few highlights thrown in for good measure. I have had long hair, short hair, and every length it can grow in between those two states.
As far as products are concerned, and seeing as how this is supposed to be about products I had better get to it, it is my belief that a man can get by with a few quality essential products in his toiletry bag.
1.Hair Spray; A man can use hairspray with hair of almost any length. Short hair can be sprayed into submission and given texture, and long hair can be sprayed into classic parts “do’s” of the 50’s and 60’s, or just given enough “grit” to mold. Personally I use L’Oreal Elnett. I believe it to be the strongest holding spray that disappears almost completely when brushed through. Sold at most drugstores $14.

2.Wax; A good wax can change a man’s life. Using different amounts a man can use a wax to give his hair gloss, hold, or perfectly stringy “beach waves”. I use Bumble & bumble “Sumo-Wax”. It has a natural hold and doesn’t darken my hair while still giving it firm structure and solid hold. This is especially good for short hair types wanting minimal hold and texture. Sold at select salons and beauty supply stores $25.

3.Shiner: Any good gloss can do the trick for this, giving the hair a minimal amount of shine and texture while also weighing the hair down a bit, saving longer hair from frizz and shorter hair from being bland. The two products I use for this are either John Masters’ Organics “Shine On” or Bumble & bumble “Star Shine”. The former being an organic sea kelp gel that is easily applied and helps to moisturize hair when applied, the latter being an aerosol that is easily sprayed over styled hair of any length to ad shine and decrease frizz. John Masters's "Shine On" can be found at most Whole Foods and select salons $30...very large tube though.

4.Grooming Cream; This being any cream that adds hold, and gives a firm level of structure to the hair. Some guys will use gels in this instance. I, however, have always felt that gel itself (like old school Dep) is too hard and eventually gets so dry that it flakes away. Instead I choose to use Bumble & bumble (do we see a trend here?) Grooming Cream, John Masters Organics Bourbon Vanilla & Tangerine Hair Texturizer, or Garnier “Fiber Gum” as a Grooming Cream. It can be used on short hair to style it with firm and flexible hold, or with long hair to hold ends together while giving it body and weight. Garnier "Fiber Gum" is sold at drugstores $7.

With these four hair products good shampoo and conditioner, a good hair brush, water, and a blow drier, a man can achieve almost any look without stripping his hair of it’s natural properties. Whether styling wet or dry hair a man can achieve almost any look using these products, which will help maintain the natural luster of his hair without striping it of it’s natural oils. Now all these products can be substituted for other, similar products, as these are simply the products that I know and trust. The types of products, on the other hand, are four essentials a man can use to maintain natural looking, easily styled hair that looks good all the time and at any occasion.

Positive Beauty Image...

The pressure to be skinny, beautiful and smart has not changed since I was a teenager. Unfortunately, it has even gotten worse. I'm writing this post for my 13 year niece who is just about to enter the challenging stage in life of puberty, mean girls, immature boys and high school! As my nieces get older, my childhood friends start to have babies and my maternal clock starts to tick, I think about how we can protect our little girls (and boys) from the dilemmas of eating disorders, bad self esteem and the pressure to be the best in school and extra curricular activities.

As a teenager I felt lost, lonely, ugly, stupid, and fat. As I result I found the only way I could gain some kind of control was by what I ate. So... I stopped eating. Four grueling years of high school, while battling anorexia, I'm sure was not how my parents imagined parenthood. Thanks to supportive friends (who are all still very much apart of my life...the good ones always are) and my amazingly supportive, EXTREMELY patient and loving parents, I pulled out of it in time to move across country to go to college and pursue my dreams.

Now a very healthy,happy and pro-vegetarian. I try to spread my knowledge of beauty, health, and exercise to everyone in my life. Some of my friends and family members may be like "enough already", but know I just love you all so much. I am also very blessed to have an amazing supportive husband who will barbecue my tofu (even though he prefers steak), spend Sunday mornings at the farmers market and find a vegetarian friendly menu while traveling together abroad. That's LOVE!

So to my beautiful, strong, intelligent, talented Niece. I encourage you to do what you love, play hard, enjoy your summers, laugh with your girl friends, ignore the immature boys, go after your dreams and I challenge you to cook at least once a week with your parents, try new healthy foods, be kind to yourself and love your body throughout it's changes (and there will be MANY) because if you feel beautiful inside you will look beautiful on the outside. Never change who you are. I love you.

Crazy Sexy INSPIRATION...Kris Carr

Hopefully we all have someone in our lives that motivates us and inspires us on a daily basis. I think two of the most intriguing qualities in a person are selflessness and confidence. I'm a believer that everything happens for a reason and just the other day I was checking out at Whole Foods and this magazine VegNews jumped out at me. In this magazine I was introduced to activist, inspiration, and wellness rock star Kris Carr. At 31 years old she was diagnosed with an incurable cancer. Seven years later she still has cancer, but it's stable. Goooooo Kris!!! Thanks to her healthy diet and lifestyle she says," I feel and look better than I ever have in my life (even before my diagnosis)."(taken from Kris Carr's book, Crazy Sexy Diet) Since her diagnosis, Carr has made one documentary for the Learning Channel (Crazy Sexy Cancer), written three books, and started crazysexylife.com. I was so inspired by this article that I had to run out and buy her brand new book Crazy Sexy Diet. You don't have to have cancer or even be sick to read what Carr has to say.

One of the question's that VegNews managing editor Elizabeth Castoria asked Carr in her interview was...

VN: "As a society,do you think we accept chronic disease as the norm?"
KC: "It's only the norm because nobody's teaching people how to live. The reason why people are having relapses the majority of the time is because they didn't change the reason they got there in the first place. That's not to say that it's their fault, but diet and lifestyle are a hug factor. Sixty-five percent of all diseases are preventable through diet and lifestyle; only five percent of all cancers are genetic-that's it. Greener, Healthy, Beautiful You 2011!

At the beginning of each year I sit down and make a list of resolutions that I want to accomplish for the new year. I then seal them up, put them in my night stand and check back in the late spring to see how I am doing and what adjustments I need to make to accomplish more on my list...or maybe I even need to add something new to my list. Each time I go to do this I think about the previous year and what I learned from the experiences and most importantly about myself. It's hard to look in the mirror sometimes and admit something to yourself that your not proud of or embarrassed by. We only have control of our own actions, not what other people say or do. So I challenge you to take control and make changes this year for you and only you!

I'm inspired by family and friends in my life everyday and I encourage you to surround yourself with the type of friends that represent you and challenge you to be the best YOU possible. If you look around your life and notice that the people in it are not the best representation of you or a positive influence in your life then go ahead and don't be afraid to clean house. As I said before, "you control YOU" so take control and surround yourself with the people that inspire you the most, make you laugh and smile, bring out the best in you and remind you how amazing you are even on those days that you question your own awesomeness!

Now maybe you're wondering what this has to do with beauty from the inside out? This past year I almost lost one of the most amazing, beautiful and inspiring woman in my life. My Grandma Meredith was told at best she probably only had a few months to live after being diagnosed over the past few years with Parkinson's, Diabetes's and now Colon Cancer. As the eldest of her five grandchildren we share a special bond that shattered the day I saw her spirit and soul leave her eyes. I didn't know how to accept this or deal with it and slipped into a real depression for the first time in my life. While I was living in a place of "woe is me" my Aunt and Uncle (who moved into my Grandma's house to take care of her) took action. My Aunt Kathy spoke with each doctor and made lists of all her medications and the dietary do's and don'ts for each drug. To make a long story short she found it best to cut out almost all processed foods, salts, sugar and alcohol and over the past month Grandma has made a 180 degree improvement and has her spirit and soul back in her eye's.

Thanks to my amazing support system of family and friends I pulled out of my funk and realized that what I preach daily to the people I care most about (eating and living a healthy lifestyle) is what is prolonging my Grandma's life (for whatever time she has left at 86). I am so thrilled that this is the 1st anniversary of my Blog. This year I have decided to focus my writing on making BEAUTIFUL, healthy lifestyle choices everyday. I'm going even greener with my diet, beauty products and house hold items and I'm going to continue to share them all with you. Cheers to a greener, healthy, beautiful you inside and out!!! 2010 is coming to an end...

With a couple minor bumps in the road (we wouldn't be where we are or who we are without the mistakes and road blocks) I am so grateful that 2010 has turned out to be such a wonderful year. Especially with a few recent opportunities I have had! I wish I had more hours in the day to BLOG for you all! I am going to try to write a few more holiday posts before the year ends! I have also been asked if I am interested in being a guest blogger on other sites and the answer is YES!!! Please email me to discuss. Here are a few beauty tips to get you through the weekend:

- Don't forget to exfoliate body and lips this time of year (you can make your own at home with honey and sugar)

- invest in a good moisturizer for your body. Best to use right out of the shower when your body is still damp.

- switch over from powder cosmetic products to creams in the winter (foundation,blush, eye shadow). You want to create that youthful glow year round.

- Don't forget about your hair! Try treating yourself with a hair mask once a week and give yourself a day or two off each week from heat styling if possible.

And ladies...help out your men with a little grooming. It's scary what I see out there! From what I can see splashed across the social networks and day to day these men need major makeovers!!! Sorry boy's!

Putting a healthy spin on your beauty routine...

My Blog is all about Beauty from the "Inside Out" and I would like to step away from beauty products for a minute and talk about what you eat. I'm not a nutritionist or a doctor, but I do believe you ARE what you eat! I was fortunate enough to grow up on a very healthy clean food diet (thanks mom). As a result, I naturally enjoy eating healthy, but I know this is not the case for everyone. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my chocolate and cheez-its, but within reason. Fall is a great time to check in with your diet (it's so easy to slip into the trap of eating naughty comfort food). I promise you your skin will thank you too!

I love shopping for fresh fruits and vegetables. I'm not very passionate about cooking, but I'm working on that. I'm always on the go so I shop for things I can grab and go or throw into a salad or quick dish. Below are some helpful hints:

1. Shopping at the Farmers Market is something I look forward to every weekend. If you have kids this could be something you enjoy together. I love that you get to try all the fruits at the Farmers Market so you can taste what's in season and take home your favorites.

2. Avoid middle aisles at the grocery store. Shop around the outside border (Fruits Veggies, Meat, Dairy). I rarely shop at the regular grocery store. I mostly shop at Whole foods, Trader Joe's and Farmers Markets. The reason for this is that so many items at the regular grocery store are pre-packaged junk! I know eating healthy can be pricey and I have a couple tricks: (1) Shop at the farmers market towards the end of the day as they tend to drop prices to sell through fresh produce; (2) When shopping at a pricey store, such as Whole Foods, purchase the store's own brand (365 in While Foods case), which is comparable in price to a regular grocery store.

3.When bringing home fresh veggies and fruits wash and cut them up immediately. Place them in clear tupperware at eye level (for the kids especially). If it is already washed and cut up you will reach for them instead of the potato chips! I learned this when I was a nanny for a family in NYC. The mother was a nutritionist and she always had fresh fruits and veggies cut up at eye/reach level for the kids. The 2 year old would ask me for a cucumber and the 4 year old would open up the fridge and grab the bowl of grapes. This works for grown-ups too!

Here's my shopping list and things I always tend to have on hand(FYI:I'm a Pescatarian):
Bell Peppers (I like getting them in different colors)
Cucumbers
Avocados
Tomatoes
Carrots
Squash (my favorite veggie)
Fresh Spinach
Fruit (apples, blueberries, bananas, grapefruit, pears, grapes...this season)
Hummus- Dip veggies or pita bread
Greek Yogurt (plain has the least amount of sugar. Greek yogurt has way more protein than regular yogurt and way less sugar) Try adding honey to sweeten.
Crumbled Feta or Goat cheese ( I put these on salads or in a pita wrap)
Lentils- I buy them pre-packaged at Trader Joe's and throw them on salads and in pitas with veggies and hummus
Black Beans
Trail Mix ( roasted almonds, cashews, cranberries). This is a staple.
Granola or High Fiber Cereal (look for LOW sugar) I love Kashi cereal's.
Granola Bars (Kashi brand- I need snacks and this is also a staple)
Oatmeal (really great for you...no sugar added of course...add your own honey and fruit)
Rice Cakes with Almond Butter and Jam
Almond Butter- Great snack on bananas or rice cakes
Tuna Fish
FISH- I eat tons of Fish since I don't really eat meat
Tofu
Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk or Organic Skim Milk
Whole Wheat pasta
Whole Wheat Pita Bread or Bread (I don't eat very much bread, but I love it. I also love sourdough which actually isn't that bad for you. Pita is GREAT to stuff with veggies and meat for lunch. Add hummus or salad dressing for taste.
Brown Rice
Quinoa- it's like a grain but higher in protein and with no gluten (amazing stuff!)
Veggie Burgers

I also LOVE soup's and plan on making many this winter!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE chocolate and must eat a little every day. I buy dark chocolate bars and keep them in the freezer and take a piece or two off every night.

I never deprive myself. If I want salt or sweet I'll eat it, but the key is portion control and to eat fresh clean foods MOST of the time.

The fabulous Nicole has given us more great tips for being healthy in 2010. Read on for the right mindset and a healthy lifestyle in 2010 part 2!

A bit more specifics…
•Do NOT skip breakfast. Forfeiting breakfast causes blood sugar to drop and causes increased fatigue, contributes to increase snacking throughout the day, and slows the metabolism down for the remainder of the day. Furthermore, do not skip meals during the day. Going more than 6 hours between meals slows down the metabolism.
•Set goals to increase fruit and vegetable consumption. Try to introduce one new fruit and one new vegetable per week into your daily routine.
•Focus on foods you should be eating rather than foods you shouldn’t eat. Increasing consumption of fruits and vegetables will displace other high calorie, high fat foods and will lead to an overall decrease in daily calorie and fat consumption.
•Let yourself have a treat! Allowing yourself to have a sweet treat per day will not throw off your entire meal plan. There are no forbidden foods and all foods can fit into a balanced diet. Depriving yourself of foods you love will only cause you to crave that food item more. Just be sure to keep the empty calorie consumption in check!
•Focus on healthy fats. Limit the amounts of saturated fats in the diet and increase consumption of unsaturated fatty acids. Sources of saturated fats include animal fats in meats, cheeses and dairy products, as well as pre-packaged snack foods. Foods containing unsaturated fatty acids include avocados, nuts and oils such as canola and olive oil. A simple way to improve the quality of your cooking at home is to switch from vegetable oil blends to canola or olive oils.
•Try adding alternative sources of protein in your diet such as beans, lentils and tofu. These options are cholesterol free, rich in protein and contain no saturated fatty acids.
•Drink plenty of water each day. The general recommendation is 8 glasses of water per day, but I say the more water the better! Enjoy a glass with every meal and between meals to promote satiety and nourish the cells of your body. Don’t like water? Try adding lemon, orange, or lime slices to add taste and fiber. Cut down on sugary drinks including juice, soda, sweet teas and lemonades. Consuming these types of beverages can add up to as much as 1,000 calories per day!
•Don’t forget to exercise. Not only does exercise significantly contribute to weight loss, it also promotes a healthy blood pressure and can decrease stress. Include at least 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise most days of the week. For weight loss, boost this up to 1 hour most days of the week. This does not mean you have to spend an hour in the gym each day. Increase physical activity time per day through simple activities like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or parking farther away from a building entrance. Start small and slowly increase the amount and intensity of physical activity. Also include weight bearing exercise 2-3 days per week to increase muscle mass, increase calorie expenditure at rest and prevent osteoporosis.
•Continue to monitor changes in weight in order to catch a 5 pound weight gain before it becomes 20 pounds. Try not to obsess over a number on a scale and do not worry about 1-3 pound weight fluctuations. Fluctuations in weight occur naturally depending on exercise, water weight and hormonal factors.
•Set realistic goals: Do not expect to loose 10 pounds in a week. Healthy, sustainable weight loss should be 1-2 pounds per week. To loose a pound per week you must consume 500 less calories per day or burn off an extra 500 calories per day. Be patient, be active, make smart choices and you will see results I promise!
•Finally, make sure to get plenty of rest!

The right mindset and a healthy lifestyle in 2010- Part 1

At the beginning of a New Year it is common for people to make New Year resolutions to loose weight. This year, I challenge you to concentrate on improving overall health rather than solely on weight loss. Focusing on loosing pounds rather than well-being can cause unrealistic expectations and lead to fad dieting, dangerous habits and harmful over the counter diet pills. Take the word “diet” out of your vocabulary and begin to make better lifestyle choices that will improve energy, combat disease, promote longevity and contribute towards and active lifestyle. Set realistic goals, make permanent changes and the weight loss will follow naturally.

First steps…..
•Take a trip to the grocery store and clean out your refrigerator and pantry. Get rid of anything that causes you feelings of guilt or temptation and replace foods with more nutritious options. Make simple changes to whole grains (breads, pastas, cereals, rice), buy more fruits and vegetables and incorporate them into snacks and meals, switch to fat free or 1% milk and dairy products, try to limit red meat consumption to 2-4 times per month and focus on consuming more lean protein sources such as turkey, chicken and fish, and replace some of the egg yolks in your diet with egg whites.
•Do not cut back on calories too quickly. Slowly reduce calories by decreasing portion sizes and consuming more fruits and vegetables.
•Take inventory of your cups and plates. According to Lisa Young, PhD, R.D., author of The Portion Teller Plan, reports that since the 1970s dinner plates have increased in size by 25%, to 12 inches or more in diameter. This causes an increase in food consumption because the majority of individuals tend to eat all of the food they serve themselves. Eating off a plate that is about 2 inches smaller will cause you to serve yourself 22% fewer calories per meal. This action alone can cause a 2 pound weight loss in one month, according to Brian Wansink, Ph.D., director of Cornell University’s Food and Bran Lab. Choose smaller plates for high calorie foods and large plates for salads and vegetables. If you are using a larger plate fill up half of the plate with vegetables, ¼ of the plate with a starch and ¼ of the plate with a protein source. For cups, use large glasses for water and small 8 oz glasses for fruit juices and other beverages.
•Eat at home more often. When you eat at home you can control what you eat and will consume less calories and fat then when you are out at restaurants. If you do eat out, don’t be afraid to sound picky when ordering. Ask if they have low fat option, ask for the dressing on the side, ask to have something grilled, not fried, and ask if they have whole wheat options. Another tip for eating out is asking for a to-go box at the beginning of the meal. Cut the portion in half and put half away in the box to take home for another meal. Quick and simple way to cut calories and fat by 50%!
•Surround yourself with people that will help you in your health goals. Find a friend to go grocery shopping with to hold you accountable, find a gym or running buddy, or a friend that will make a healthy meal with you once a week.
•Stay away from fad diets. A fad diet is a diet that asks you to eliminate entire food groups, eat foods in a certain order, or that promotes the consumption of one type of food in excess at the expense of other foods. Fad diets, generally, do not teach you how to eat and are not sustainable. They are excessively restrictive and may be harmful. Yes, fad diets can help you loose weight in the short term, but if you are not changing lifestyle habits, the pounds will come back once the diet has finished. Furthermore, crash, yo-yo and fad dieting may have severe impacts on your health, specifically on the health of vital organs. Crash diets can be dangerous for the heart, kidneys, liver, and brain. In order to perform their daily functions, these organs rely on energy from carbohydrates. When organs do not receive enough carbohydrates, for example during strict diets that severely restrict carbohydrates, they begin to burn muscle or organ tissue in order to get adequate amounts of energy to perform vital functions. Serious resulting health conditions may include liver failure, kidney failure, heart attack, and stroke. Osteoporosis may also occur as a result of crash diets that severely restrict calcium intake. Calcium is forced to leach out of the bones and into the blood, causing fragile, brittle bones.

I am so excited to introduce you to my first guest blogger Nicole Brewer. Nicole is going to be sharing regular health and nutrition tips on my blog. Enjoy this amazing article she put together below to stay healthy this winter. Lets us know what you think.

Nicole Brewer is a registered dietitian who is currently working on her Master of Science degree at Tufts University in Boston. Nicole received her Bachelor of Science in Clinical Dietetics and Nutrition at the University of Pittsburgh in 2007, and then went on to complete her dietetic internship through the ARAMARK Healthcare dietetic internship program in Philadelphia, PA. Nicole complemented her supervised clinical practice hours at the University of Pennsylvania Presbyterian Medical Center and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and then went on to pass the American Dietetic Association’s Registered Dietitian exam in August of 2008. Currently, Nicole is in the second year of a graduate program at Tufts University working on her masters in Food Policy and Applied Nutrition, with concentrations in Humanitarian Assistance and Nutrition Interventions. The program is internationally focused and addresses issues of food insecurity, emergency food aid and relief, maternal and child health, food supplementation and fortification, hunger and malnutrition and policy based interventions and relief strategies. Nicole plans on completing her M.S. degree in May 2010.

Want to protect yourself against the common cold and influenza virus this winter? One of the best things you can do this cold and flu season is to build up your immune system through antibody producing and antioxidant rich foods. The vitamins and minerals to focus on to boost immunity are vitamins A, D, E, C, B6, and zinc and selenium. Try to get these nutrients through the diet first, and then use supplements if you feel that you are not getting enough.

Vitamin A: Vitamin A increases white blood cell counts in the body, which fight infection. Even a moderate increase in Vitamin A has been show to increase immune responses. Fall is a great time for vitamin A foods, so take advantage! Think orange and dark green. Vitamin A rich foods include winter squash (like butternut squash), sweet potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, and dark green leafy veggies like kale and spinach.

Vitamin E: Vitamin E is an antioxidant that prevents free radical damage to immune cells and increases antibody production in the body. Antibodies help to remove and destroy pathogens and prevent them from affecting healthy cells. Recent researching has suggested that vitamin E specifically helps fight off influenza. To get this protective antioxidant, focus on foods like eggs, whole grains, tuna, almonds, sunflower seeds, spinach, papaya, olives, blueberries and olive and oils.

Vitamin C: Everyone knows that vitamin C is good for colds right? It can be, but maybe not as much as you think. The research is confusing. When studies say that vitamin C can help prevent/ alleviate cold and flu symptoms, the majority of the studies use 1,000 mg three times a day as their experimental dosage. This is a mega dose that I would not recommend for everyone. Vitamin C toxicity is rare, however consistent intake of over 1,000 mg/ day can have toxic effects on the body (for children the upper limit is 400-650mg/day), and an intake over 2,000 mg/day may cause an upset stomach and diarrhea.

A recent statement from the national institute of health on Vitamin C and cold and flu prevention: "The use of vitamin C in the prevention/treatment of the common cold and respiratory infections remains controversial, with ongoing research. For cold prevention, more than 30 clinical trials including over 10,000 participants have examined the effects of taking daily vitamin C. Overall, no significant reduction in the risk of developing colds has been observed. In people who developed colds while taking vitamin C, no difference in severity of symptoms has been seen overall, although a very small significant reduction in the duration of colds has been reported (approximately 10% in adults and 15% in children). Notably, a subset of studies in people living in extreme circumstances, including soldiers in sub-arctic exercises, skiers, and marathon runners, have found a significant reduction in the risk of developing a cold by approximately 50%. This area merits additional study and may be of particular interest to elite athletes or military personnel."

Vitamin C intake does tend to decrease in the winter months as we generally eat less fresh fruits and vegetables during the winter months. So, make an effort to load up on fresh fruits and vegetables this year! All fruits and vegetables contain some amount of vitamin C, but the foods with the highest amounts are oranges and citrus fruits, strawberries, tomatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, green leafy vegetables, red peppers, and potatoes.

Vitamin D- Tufts University, along with various other institutions, has been doing a lot of research on Vitamin D. It supports adequate immune function by decreasing inflammation in the body and promoting energy metabolism. The general recommendation for vitamin D intake is 1,000 IUD or more per day for general health, but an intake of 5,000-6,000 IU is recommended during the winter months to prevent the flu.

A few recent studies that I would like to point out…
The vitamin D Council recently reported that there is new evidence that the flu and the common cold may be prevented through adequate doses of vitamin D. Cold and flu season and vitamin D deficiency season occur at the same time. As the amount of vitamin D exposure from the sun decreases during the winter months, the incidence of colds and flu increase. When vitamin D levels in the blood fall, the body’s production of immune system based proteins decreases. High risk groups for vitamin D deficiency include children with neurodevelopment disorders, Blacks and Hispanics; these populations are also at a higher risk for the H1N1 flu.

If I had to suggest one supplement to take this winter, it would be vitamin D. A recent study found that individuals who do not take vitamin D have a 9 times great risk of getting the flu compared to individuals who take vitamin D. Vitamin D can also be found in egg yolks, liver, fatty fish, fortified milk and orange juice and whole grains.
Vitamin B6: Vitamin B6 also increases antibody production that protects the body from infection. Good sources of vitamin B6 include fortified cereals, potatoes, bananas, tuna, chicken breast, turkey breast, cod, salmon, snapper and halibut.
Zinc: Zinc improves immunity and enhances the body's ability to fight infection through an increase in white blood cells and the production of antibodies. Zinc is widespread in foods, so you’re in luck! Foods such as chickpeas, baked beans, figs, eggs, low-fat yogurt, mushrooms, peas, peanut butter, and almonds are all good sources.

Selenium: Selenium is an antioxidant that enhances immune function by protecting white blood cells from free radical damage, and increases antibody production. Selenium can be found in fish like snapper, cod and halibut, tuna and salmon, nuts, whole grains, and eggs.

In addition to these vitamins and minerals, get adequate amounts of sleep, drink plenty of water and limit Trans and saturated fatty acids. Diets high in fat can depress immune system responses and increased the risk for infections and illness. Focus on good mono and poly unsaturated fats from oily fish, nuts, and soy, and cook with canola or olive oils. I also recommend that everyone take a standard multivitamin year round to keep the body healthy and to supplement what you might be lacking in your diet. Now go shopping, eat well, and stay healthy this winter!

A: Use a spot treatment with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. This will kill the bacteria within a couple days. You can also treat the pimple with a clay mask. The clay helps reduce the inflammation and soothes the pimple.

Q: I am concerned about the dangers of aluminum in my deodorant. Are there any effective, yet safe alternatives? Lucy, SF

A: Aluminum is the third most naturally abundant element in the environment, found in food, water, pharmaceutical as well as a wide range of consumer products. The overwhelming mass of toxicity data available does not indicate any risk of harmful effects from using any cosmetic products that contain Aluminum. The amount of Aluminum absorbed through the skin from antiperspirants is significantly less than average daily exposure from food and water. Antiperspirants are designed to work on the surface of the skin, and so the products would not work if there was a significant amount absorbed. Published literature along with industry studies demonstrates a negligible potential for Aluminum salts to penetrate the skin (1). A: Congrats on your engagement! This is a great time to step it up a notch and pamper your body and skin. If you have any major concerns with your skin make an appointment to see a dermatologist. Some over the counter treatments are microdermabrasion exfoliants, hydrating masks and brightening serums. Also, start treating your hair too. Get your hair trimmed every 8-10 weeks and use a deep conditioner once a week. There is a great supplement by Phyto called Phytophanere Dietary Supplement - Hair & Nails. Amazing to help with hair growth and helps strengthen weak nails. Sold at Sephora. To answer your second question on treating broken hair, trim your hair more often, use a hair mask once a week, and do not wrap your wet hair in a towel. For a cute stylish temporary fix twist a few pieces of hair back with a clip, or pin back a braid or two around your face.

A: A primer is designed to minimize fine lines, enlarged pores, shield skin and helps your makeup stay fresh throughout the day. It works the same regardless if you wear a mineral powder or liquid foundation. Primer is a must when I work a long day. I find the best results tend to be on mature skin. I love Laura Mercier’s new Mineral Foundation Primer. You can use it under both powders and liquids.

A: When I read this question it made me laugh out loud. My closest friends and family know that my beauty regimen day and night is pretty extravagant. Traveling “carry on” for me is near impossible. Q:I love the nude lip seen in magazines and on celebrities. I have some pink to my lips naturally and have a hard time concealing their shade in order to achieve the desired look. I've tried some concealer (maybe I'm using the wrong one) and also have had trouble finding the perfect shade. Do you have any tips and tricks to achieve this popular look? And do you have any favorite nude shades? Karli, NYC
A: This is always tricky! There are several shades of nude. What we think of as “the perfect nude lip” is that pasty shell like color on the runway models. However, this color does not look great on all of us…most of us shall I say. The trick is to take a trend and make it work for you. Everyone wears color differently. My pet peeve is when I work with a client that says, "my best friend wears this color and it looks fantastic on her so I want it." It may look hideous on her, but she still wants it because she thinks it looks so great on her BF. Choose colors that accentuate your beauty and colorings. You can use a concealer to neutralize your lips or a nude colored lip liner, but I find that can be a hassle when it comes time to reapply. I love a pinky nude. I actually prefer it on myself. Healthy diet=beautiful skin!

For this post, I wanted to change things up, and write about foods you can put into your body that will make you feel and look great! Beautiful skin starts with a healthy diet. I always notice an extreme difference in my skin when I stray away from my healthy eating habits. I don't really believe in diets, I think they mess more with your head than your body. I also don't believe in scales and will never own one. You know when you gain a few extra pounds and I just adjust my diet and exercise accordingly. The best way to stay healthy and fit is to make nutritious food and exercise a part of your every day life...make it Your Way Of Life. Believe it or not eating healthy can be fun! Every weekend when my husband and I are both in town we go for a hike and then head to our favorite farmers market where we buy all of our fresh, organic fruits and vegetables for the next few days. I love shopping at farmers markets! Not only are we supporting local farmers we are buying fresh organic foods with no pesticides and we are helping to reduce our carbon footprint! Also, a little tip: Vendors tend to drop their prices as closing time nears. Eating healthy not only makes you feel great, it improves your skin, helps you look younger and feel attractive. So stay away from too many fats, sugars, coffee, smoking and excessive alcohol which all tend to wreck havoc on your skin.

As a crafty young teen, I often tried to convince my mother to buy me the latest and greatest trendy clothes and cosmetics. My reasoning, of course, was that all the other teens had them. "If everyone were to jump off a bridge would you?" she would ask. Well, now encompassed in the world of beauty and fashion this bloggerista asks, "If everyone were to switch over to mineral makeup would you?" My answer to this may in fact be YES!!! Mineral makeup is all the rage and for great reason. Free of chemicals, fillers and dyes they cause less irritation to the skin. An added plus is they are infused with sun-shielding ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (spf). The light weight texture makes application a breeze and easy to layer to the coverage of your choice. The trick is to find your correct shade and make sure not to go too light! My secret remedy is cooler showers (the steamy hot water drys out your skin), exfoliate, body lotions and conditioner. Here are some of my favorite fall products to keep your skin soft and smooth.

Aveeno Nourish and Condition leave-in treatment $6.99 (drug stores). I use this as a detangler. Works wonders on my long hair and smells amazing.

Trader Joes Shave Cream $3.49. This is one of my secret "steals". It comes in a honey mango scent or unscented. It feels like you're putting conditioner on your legs instead of shaving cream and the mango scent is FABULOUS. Great for men too!

Korres Natural Products Lemon Lip Scrub $19 (Sephora). I keep this by my sink and use it after I brush my teeth morning and night. Keeps my lips smooth and hydrated all winter long. Love it!

Kiehl's Lip Balm #1 $6.50 (nordstrom). This is one of my staples. I keep one in my nightstand and it's the first thing to go on my lips morning and night. Tip: I put it on my cuticles too!

Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion $8.59 (drug stores). I love how light yet moisturizing this lotion is. Tip: apply lotion right out of shower when your skin is still damp. Your moisturizer will penetrate deeper working faster.

Often it's the little things in life, and in a girls makeup bag, that make all the difference in the world. My go-to tool and secret weapon is an eyelash curler. I am always amazed to hear women say that they don't have one. LADIES run and get yourself an eyelash curler today! For as little as $3.99 your world can change. Using an eyelash curler is simple. The key is to be gentle. Start at the root of the lash and work your way up the lashes squeezing 2-3 times until you reach the ends. Follow up with 2-3 coats of mascara. You will be amazed at how wide eyed and transformed your eyes become. You can also use a heated eyelash curler. These work best as a touch up after you have mascara on your lashes.

My secret to a big beautiful smile is gorgeous healthy white teeth! Several years ago I started using crest whitestrips a couple times a year and I now swear by them. Use 1-2 times a day for 30 minutes (1 time a day if your gum's are sensitive) for 2 weeks and you will start to see instant results within the first few days! While whitening avoid coffee,tea, red wine etc...they tend to stain your teeth.

In the last year I have started to switch over to sulfate free cleansers in my day to day life. Sulfates create the suds in our shampoos, body washes, cleansers, and detergents. Dry shampoos 101

These days more women are jumping onto the "dirty hair" bandwagon. Supposedly the less you wash your hair the healthier and less dry it will become. What if you have an oily scalp or workout everyday? Dry Shampoo to the rescue!!! In between washes the dry shampoo will absorb excess oil or you can use it to give oomph to fine hair. Just apply it at your roots and massage in or fluff with your finger tips. I also like to zap a blow dryer at the root for a few seconds afterwards just for a little more oomph!

Ojon Rub-Out Dry cleanser $24 (smells amazing)

Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Shampoo $19 (great for the natural ingredient consumer, this comes in a powder form rather than an aerosol can
...they also make an aerosol version. Just pour a nickle to quarter size amount into the palm of your hand and massage into scalp.)

Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder $35 (Pricey, but these are sold in different colors to match your hair color... white, red, blonde, brown, black so they also work as a root touch up. LOVE that!)

Notes: Hold can 10-12 inches from dry hair; spray thoroughly, concentrating on oily areas; let dry; brush out thoroughly (or massage into scalp) and style.

So we have treated the eye area, applied color and now we want to erase and conceal any darkness under the eyes. Learn to embrace concealer ladies, it can and will be your best beauty friend! When using concealer under the eyes you want to use a liquid formula so it does not get dry and creppy. Apply concealer after you have applied your eye shadows. This way it also works as an eraser to any color that has fallen under the eye. Pat concealer on very gently (too much rubbing or pulling can cause wrinkles) or use a concealer brush. See a few of my favorite concealers below!

Loreal True Match Super Blendable Concealer (under $10 Drugstores) great product at an affordable price.

Lorac Double feature Concealer ($24 sephora) A concealer, highlighter, and hygienic blender ball all in one slim stick.

Christian Dior Hydrating Concealer ($28 Sephora/department stores) light, creamy, gently-soothing coverage. This product will last you a very long time. I LOVE it!

Okay ladies...your eyes are one of your best features and you don't have to do much to enhance them. Follow these easy steps to flirty, sexy eyes!

Application

1.Primer: Start off by prepping your eye lids with an eyeshadow primer such as Urban Decay Primer Potion or Too Faced Shadow Insurance (both $17). An eye primer prevents your shadow from creasing or fading.

2.Natural eyes: Start with a highlight color; white, champagne, vanilla, pink or gold. Brush highlight color under the arches to create lift and in the inside corners to make your eyes sparkle. Then apply a midtone shadow slightly darker than your natural skin color. Apply in the crease of the lid to enhance the eye's. Finally, add a contour color (in the same family as your midtone;just go deeper) to the outer corner of the eye. Try Urban Decay Eye Palettes (average $36)

3.Smoky eyes: Sweep a dark-hued contour eye shadow across the lid. Then add a midtone shade in the crease. Follow with my highlighting tips above. Try Sephora Brand Smoky Eye Palette $38

4.Eyeliner: For both looks apply eyeliner to the base of the lash line (press or pencil into the root of the lash) pressing from underneath the lashes. To achieve more of a dramatic look smudge a dark shadow on top of the liner and then smudge under the bottom lashes. Try Sephora Brand Nano Eyeliner $5 or Bobbi Brown Gel EyeLiner $21

5.Mascara: To finish it off coat your lashes with two coats of mascara. Avoid waterproof as it tends to flake and is harsh on the lashes. Try Loreal Voluminous Mascara $7

It's All in the Eyes Part 1

There are so many beauty tricks and tips and thanks to all of your questions and suggestions I have many topics to write about. One of the biggest questions I get is how to treat and apply makeup around the eye area. I am going to break this up into a couple blogs because there is so much to talk about. Here we go...

The eye area is the most delicate skin on your face and should be treated very carefully and gently. If your products are too heavy around the eye they can create little white bumps under the skin called Milia (this happens when your skin can't naturally exfoliate, therefore little white bumps appear below the surface of the skin). You should never attempt to poke or prod at these because this can leave scaring. See a dermatologist or estetision to extract the pesty bumps.

Eye cream is a must for woman of all ages. The best way to treat and prevent around the eye is to HYDRATE! Choose an eye cream for your skin type that will hydrate without being too light or too heavy. You can also treat wrinkles, puffiness, and dark circles with any of these added ingredients that I love...peptides, vitamin C, vitamin K/hesperiden (for dark circles) retional (wrinkles), green tea (puffiness)Check out any of the below that I have tried and loved.

Beauty and your breath...

One of the hardest things for me to embrace on a day to day basis is just breathing and staying relaxed. I am no pro at this by any means, but have found within myself that my skin and body are much more radiant and healthy when I have less stress in my day to day life. Easier said than done, right? I have been conducting a considerable amount of research on breath, health, happiness and beauty and started recording some of my favorite quotes in a journal along the way. I find them encouraging and helpful, hopefully you will too.
